Alter Hansehafen – the city’s “living room”
The old Hanseatic harbour was established on the Schwinge as early as the 11th century. Both sides of the river are lined with historic half-timbered houses. Many of the buildings, some of which date back to the 15th century, are now used as restaurants. It is just five minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Stade (former Ramada Hotel Stade) to the harbour.
Open-air museum on the island - history you can touch
The Freilichtmuseum on the island is one of Germany’s oldest open-air museums. Particularly worth a look are the “Altländer Haus”, a superb gabled house with colourful stone masonry, the windmill, and the house known as “Himmelpforten no. 6”. It’s just fifteen minutes’ walk to the museum from the H+ Hotel Stade.
Churches of “St. Wilhadi” and “Cosmae” in the city centre
The churches of “St. Wilhadi“ and “Ss. Cosmae et Damiani”, or the “Cosmae Church” for short, are two interesting buildings to be found in the city centre. Constructed during the 13th and 14th century, they are two impressive examples of the north German Gothic style in brick. It is just five minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Stade to both churches.
Altes Land – apples, courtyards, and wide horizons
The Altes Land has been characterised by its orchards since the 17th century. Apples are the main crop, with a sprinkling of other fruits. The traditional, magnificent courtyards transport you back to earlier times, and more than one offers freshly-baked apple pie. It’s about 20 minutes’ drive from the H+ Hotel Stade to the tourist information centre in Jork in the Altes Land.
Löwenapotheke with antique interiors
The Löwenapotheke pharmacy was established in 1655. Inside this patrician house, you can still see the original expansive staircase which was used as a prestigious reception area, and the dispensary still contains mahogany furnishings completed in 1867. It is approximately five minutes’ walk to the Apotheke from the H+ Hotel Stade.
