Wilhelm Richard Wagner designed the opera house on the green hill in Bayreuth where the annual Richard Wagner Festivals are still held today. There is also the old Villa Wahnfried in the city, where the Leipzig-born composer lived for years. You can also visit the castle with its charming courtyard garden as well as the Margravial Opera House, a Baroque theatre that is considered one of the finest in Europe. During the day the vast shopping mall, Rotmain Center, is the perfect place to stock up on the latest fashions. In the evening, people from all around the world can meet in the lively pedestrian zone in the old part of the city with its welcoming bars and wide range of restaurants.

Make the most of the proximity to the historically rich neighbouring countries such as the Czech Republic and discover Karlovy Vary, or Karlsbad in German, with its 15 mineral springs whose temperatures range from 13 °C up to 73.4 °C. You can also visit the impressive Russian Orthodox church of St. Peter and St. Paul with its blue-gold onion domes. The health resort, with its beneficial climate, also offers well-designed hiking trails which cover a total of 130km.
Another popular tourist destination is Kulmbach, 23km away, with Plassenburg Castle, an historic fortification which houses the world’s largest and most impressive collection of pewter figures in its own museum. The Mönchshof, another attraction for visitors, was a well-known brewery for more than 600 years and has a cosy beer garden as well as exhibition rooms housing antique bottles, machines and diagrams depicting the interesting history of brewing. You don’t want to miss the delicious Kulmbacher bratwurst, a local speciality served in freshly baked aniseed rolls.
