Up on the “Green Hill”
There is no other musical theatre in Germany which hosts performances on so few days - from the 25th of July to the 28th of August every year - yet is of such great importance internationally. It was Richard Wagner’s initiative which led to the construction of a “Theatrical Festival” between 1872 and 1875 which is now a major attraction for visitors from all over the world.
Baroque theatre
As
one of the few remaining intact theatre buildings from the 18th
century, the opera house, which also acted as the backdrop for the
film “Farinelli”, has been a UNESCO world heritage site since
2012.
The magnificent interior, which is an artistic memorial created
by the Margrave Friedrich and his wife Wilhelmine, is still
impressive today.
Eremitage
Just
like the New Castle, the Eremitage park bears the design hallmarks of
Margavine Wilhelmine of Bayreuth. The patron of the arts had the Old
Castle’s original garden extended to include groves, avenues and
water features.
The parks developed their current landscape character
during the Romantic period. This gave rise to a gem which combines
nature and history to form a unique canvas.
Franz-Liszt-Museum
Often
in the shadow of his even more illustrious son-in-law Richard Wagner,
the musical heritage of Bayreuth would not be complete without Franz
Liszt.
Located beside the Villa Wahnfried, the Franz Liszt Museum
today houses pictures, letters and personal items as a memorial to
the much-travelled composer, who died here in 1886.

At home with the Wagner family
Much has been written about Richard Wagner, some of it mysterious. If you want to form your own impression of the man and the composer, Villa Wahnfried can offer a deep insight. On the ground floor of the former Wagner family home, there is a permanent exhibition with original exhibits, and special temporary exhibitions on the second floor complete the picture of Wagner.
Cellar under Bayreuth
Climb
down into Bayreuth’s cool underworld! The master brewers of
Bayreuth have been maturing their beer in barrels for over a hundred
years here, where ores have been mined since the 16th century.
On a
beer tour through the catacombs of the AKTIEN brewery, you will pick
up a lot of fascinating details from the history of the town and the
brewery.
Holidays in Bayreuth, we look forward to meeting you!
