Ludwigsmonument - landmark of the city
Reaching a height of almost 40 metres, the Ludwigsmonument on Luisenplatz is also known affectionately by locals as “Lange Ludwig”, or “Lanky Ludwig”. This memorial to Ludwig I, the first Grand Duke of Hesse, was inaugurated in 1844, and towers over the cruciform square. It is just two stops on the S-Bahn from the H+ Hotel Darmstadt to Luisenplatz.
Darmstadt Künstlerkolonie – Art Nouveau at its finest
This artists’ colony in Mathildenhöhe was founded in 1899, and is considered an important centre for the Art Nouveau movement, or “Jugendstil”, as it is known in Germany. The area is characterised by magnificent residential, exhibition and studio buildings. Of particular interest are the Wedding Tower, the Russian Chapel, and the Rosenhöhe park. It is just a ten-minute drive from the H+ Hotel Darmstadt.
The “Weiße Turm” – a special type of gallery
The “White Tower”, measuring almost 40 metres, was built as a defensive tower and formed part of the city’s fortifications. In 1709 it was converted into a bell tower, and was given the appearance it has today. Exhibitions are shown here, and regular guided tours are available. The Darmstadt Residential Palace is a complex of buildings constructed over a total period of six hundred years.
