„Oberes Schloss“ with Museum
The “Oberes Schloss” (or “Upper Palace”) was built in the 13th century, and is the ancestral seat of the House of Nassau. Today it houses the Siegerlandmuseum für Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte (Siegerland Museum for Art and Art History), which has a collection of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, portraits of members of the Houses of Nassau and Orange, as well as hosting historical and mining exhibitions. The palace is surrounded by an ornamental garden. It’s around ten minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Siegen.
The ancient roots of the Martinikirche
The Martini Church next to the Lower Palace is a triple-nave church which has existed in its present form since the 16th century. Its history, however, dates back as far as the 8th century. It is thus the oldest religious building in the city. Look out for the exposed, early medieval mosaic floor. It’s approximately fifteen minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Siegen.
Nikolaikirche and its coronet
The St. Nicholas Church on Marktplatz is the only Romanesque church with a hexagonal floor plan to be found north of the Alps. The tower is the tallest building on the Siegberg, and is topped with a gilded coronet more than two metres in diameter. It is regarded as the landmark of this “coronet city”. It is approximately ten minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Siegen.
“Unteres Schloss” and the Princes’ Crypt
The “Unteres Schloss” (“Lower Palace”) was built at the end of the 17th century as the residence of the Protestant line of the House of Nassau-Siegen. Also part of the palace are the “Dicke Turm” (“Fat Tower”) with its Glockenspiel, and the Fürstengruft (“Princes’ Crypt”), which you can visit as part of a city tour. It is approximately 20 minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Siegen.
Museum für Gegenwartskunst with regional focus
This museum for contemporary art shows paintings, photographs, videos and installations. The work of Bernd and Hilla Becher provides a regional focus. The museum also shows works by all artists who have been awarded the “Rubens Prize” by the City of Siegen. It is approximately fifteen minutes’ walk from the H+ Hotel Siegen.
