European history on the Orange Route

Start

Bad Arolsen

Princess Emma zu Waldeck und Pyrmont was born in Bad Arolsen Residential Palace on August 2, 1858. The princess from the Orange dynasty became the second wife of William III, King of the Netherlands, and is therefore the ancestor of today's Dutch royal family.

The former Queen Beatrix is a great-granddaughter of hers. The Orange Route links this close relationship between German and Dutch history at numerous interesting locations. The approximately 2,400-kilometre route leads through 9 federal states and the Netherlands to important stations of the dynasty. Princess Emma made sure that the northern Hessian town of Bad Arolsen and its castle are also on the route.
