Discover Mount Titlis in the Central Alps
If you are staying as a guest in Engelberg, be sure to make an excursion to Mount Titlis. You can take an aerial cableway up to the only glacier in the Central Alps that has been opened up to visitors. You can experience winter even at the height of summer and, above all, a magnificent panorama that will captivate you. Those brave enough can go on the Titlis Cliff Walk. This is a suspension bridge built at an altitude of more than 3000 metres and situated above a drop of 500 metres. When you walk across the bridge, you experience not only a breathtaking view but also a fantastic adrenaline kick.
Engelberg is also a dream for skiers
Today, Mount Titlis provides brand new attractions: you can now hike through a glacier cave and the especially courageous can undertake the “Titlis Cliff Walk” – 150 steps across the highest suspension bridge in the whole of Europe, 500 metres above the chasm. When visibility is good, you can see most of central Switzerland from up here.
Of course, skiers won’t miss out in Engelberg either: 82 kilometres of slopes entice numerous winter sports enthusiasts here. The main attractions include two runs of 20 and 12 kilometres in length that are some of the longest in the whole of the Alps. This fantastic ski area is family friendly but also offers many slopes of deep snow to delight the real “freeriders”. Today, Engelberg really does seem to be a place created for angels.
Bollywood loves Swiss ski resort Engelberg
Who would have thought that Engelberg, with its c. 4,000 inhabitants, would count as one of the favourite European holiday destinations for Indians? It’s true: the small Swiss ski resort is yearned for as a place of love and romance. Since Bollywood movies, such as “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” (the love triangle), began regularly filming here, almost every child in India knows about it. Indian lovers, in particular, are drawn here to whisper sweet nothings in the alpine resort that has become so exotic to them.
How the modern fairytale began
20 years ago, Engelberg – although indeed very beautiful – was, in summer, a very dead Swiss ski resort. A shrewd mountain railway manager then had the idea of contacting the Indian film industry – which was growing very quickly at the time – to suggest that the idyllic Engelberg would be an ideal place to film Indian love stories. The Indians agreed and Bollywood movies such as “Madly in Love” that were filmed against the romantic backdrop of the Alps, made smash hits here.
The Indians soon began to arrive in droves to see the 3,200 metre high Titlis-glacier, made famous in so many of the films. Since then, Engelberg has been a popular holiday destination throughout the year.
