Leipzig has many cultural attractions. The famous St. Thomas Church, where Bach was once the choirmaster, and the world-famous Gewandhaus concert hall, are close to one another. The university is next to the Gewandhaus. If you have read Goethe’s Faust, then you might like to visit the famous Auerbachkeller. This is close to the Mädler Passage. There you can relax, shop and enjoy the interesting architecture. In the evening, there is plenty of culture and an interesting nightlife in Leipzig for you to enjoy. Go to the theatre or visit one of the many bars and clubs that make the city centre a great place to spend the evening.

You can go shopping in the Nova Eventis shopping centre and admire its interesting architecture and its various fountains. In less than an hour by car or by train, you can reach Dresden, the capital of Saxony. Places not to miss before you head home include the Semperoper opera house, the Zwinger palace next to it with its ‘Green Vaults’ and the world-famous art gallery.

Leipzig Zoo and “Gondwana Land”

Leipzig Zoo has one of the richest traditions of any zoo in Germany. It is home to over 900 species of animal. Marvel at the largest great ape facility in the world and Europe’s largest tropical hall, “Gondwana Land”. There are also playgrounds and a restaurant area for those all-important breaks. You will need about 20 minutes to get here from the H4 Hotel Leipzig.

Monument to the Battle of the Nations - 300,000 tonnes of stone

The Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) is a reminder of the 1813 battle. At 91 metres, it is one of the largest memorials in Europe. Visitors are impressed by the Ruhmeshalle pantheon and its guard statues, and the domed ceiling decorated with 324 almost life-sized equestrian paintings. You can drive here in around 15 minutes from the H4 Hotel Leipzig.

The Thomaskirche dates back to the 15th century, and is famous worldwide for its former choirmaster, Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as the “Thomanerchor”, or St. Thomas Choir. The church’s exterior is characterised above all by its Renaissance tower. Inside the church is Bach’s final resting place. The Thomanerchor performs here regularly. The Grassi Museum houses the Ethnography Museum (Museum für Völkerkunde), the Applied Arts Museum (Museum für Angewandte Kunst), and the Musical Instruments Museum (Museum für Musikinstrumente). The complex was built from 1925 to 1929 and, like some of the exhibition spaces, is designed in the “Neue Sachlichkeit” (New Objectivity) and “Art Deco” styles. The Leipzig cotton mill in Lindenau was once one of the largest cotton mills in continental Europe, and today houses a mix of artists, designers and artisans. Eleven galleries and 100 studios, such as those of Neo Rauch, Rosa Loy and Tilo Baumgärtel, invite you to take a tour. It is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the H4 Hotel Leipzig.
